In a groundbreaking event aligned with UNESCO’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Hi! PARIS Center is organizing a round table on February 14, 2025. The focus is “Breaking biases early: Empowering girls to envision themselves in STEM.”
Bias against women in STEM careers starts early, often before they even reach the classroom. From childhood, girls receive subtle and overt signals about what they’re expected to aspire to, shaping their sense of potential and place in the world. This influence has serious implications, affecting diversity in fields crucial to progress. Breaking this cycle calls for a collective effort from parents, educators, and media to challenge traditional gender norms. By fostering curiosity and showcasing diverse role models, we can help open doors for more young women in STEM, setting the stage for greater innovation and inclusion.
In alignment with UNESCO’s International Day of Women and Girls in Science, this roundtable will address the crucial yet often under-emphasized role of high-school education in encouraging young girls to pursue science. Despite frequent mention in discussions on gender equality in STEM, this stage of education rarely receives focused attention. We aim to bring it into the spotlight, exploring the impact these years have on influencing girls’ interest in scientific fields.
