Research Seminars on Gromov-Type Distances and Synthetic Data

We are honored to host two research seminars with renowned speakers: Facundo Memoli and Julia Kempe.

Research Seminar 1: “The exact determination of Gromov-type distances between spheres.”

  • Speaker: Facundo Memoli, Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Ohio State University. His research intersects metric geometry, topology, probability, and their applications in science and engineering such as topological data analysis and networks.

More about Facundo Memoli

  • Abstract: This talk focuses on the Gromov-Hausdorff distance and its Optimal Transport variants, like the Gromov-Wasserstein distance. Although these distances are crucial in data classification applications, their exact values are rarely known. The presentation will cover newly established lower bounds for the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between spheres, proven via optimal correspondences and linked to a version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. If time allows further exploration into the Gromov-Wasserstein distance will be discussed.
  • Date & Time: May 17, 2024, at 2:00 PM
  • Location: Télécom Paris (Palaiseau), Amphitheater 7

Research Seminar 2: “Synthetic Data – Friend or Foe in the Age of Scaling?”

  • Speaker: Julia Kempe, Silver Professor at NYU, with affiliations at the Center for Data Science, Courant Institute, ENS Paris, and Meta FAIR Paris. Her extensive background spans from quantum computing to data science.

  • Abstract: As AI models scale up, understanding how neural scaling laws evolve is critical, especially as synthetic data becomes more prevalent in training datasets. This talk explores potential changes to these scaling laws, the concept of model collapse, and phenomena like shifted scaling and un-learning. The discussion will be backed by extensive research and experiments, including a large-scale study with a transformer model on arithmetic and text generation tasks.
  • Date & Time: June 18, 2024, at 11:00 AM
  • Location: Télécom Paris (Palaiseau), Amphitheater 7

We look forward to your participation in these seminars, which are set to offer significant insights into their respective fields!
